What is a futon set?

The frame

The frame

It is the structure. The frame is made of wood (pine, maple, oak, ash, gean or exotic wood) metal or a mix of both. The wood can be natural, stained or varnished in different colours. There is a great diversity of frames from the rustic style to the contemporary one. Some frames offer a storage, some have different back angles and some come with nice accessories. When you buy a frame, look carefully at the way it is built and its out siding quality, be also aware of the terms of its warranty. When you buy it, the frame comes dismantled so you need to assemble it. You can have it deliver and assemble at your home but it is not included in the price. To facilitate your shopping, we recommend to choose the format of the frame at first. This step will influence the type of futon needed for your frame.

Futon's history

One day, during ancient times, a japanese emperor ordered his general to design a mattress that could be carried by his soldiers over long distances. The futon was born, a japanese word for mattress. It consisted of a linen pouch stuffed with cotton, a few inches thick, pricked here and there to prevent the cotton from riding.

Since then, the futon is the major bed in Japan. At night, one or two futons are laid on a palliasse made of rice fibers called tatami. In the morning, the bedroom becomes the living room and the futons are put outside, on a sunny balcony, in order to aerify them. But its during the 60's, in the United States, with the craze for zen boudhism, meditation and macrobiotic that we will discover the futon as we know it today, the zafu (meditation cushion) and all of the other asian products which are now part of our daily lives.

The futon quickly spread throughout North America and was adapted to our comfort requirements and to the mattress industry standards. From the traditional japanese two inch mattress, it has now become a very comfortable mattress made of foam, polyester, springs and cotton.

Transport and installation

The frames are unassembled in boxes for most models and the futon mattresses packed in plastic bags. They can be carried in a mini-van, truck, station wagon or hatchback cars.

The hardware and assembly instructions are included with the frames. While most models don't require any tools, you may need some basic tools for some (screwdriver, hammer, pliers).
