The Shikibuton japanese futon is a traditional bed usually used on tatamis and folded during the day to be stored. The cotton compresses over time and offers a firm comfort. In the West, these futons are used more often by persons who are looking for a very firm and grounded sleeping surface or travelers that have experienced this type of comfort. Cotton Shikibuton Components

The Cotton Shikibuton is made only of cotton layers for a more traditonal feel. Compared to our Eucalyptus Shikibuton , it will become more compacted with use.

This all-natural Shikibuton contains :

Made of four layers of cotton fiber.
The initial thickness is approximatelay 4″ and gradually compresses.

The symmetrical confection allows a rotation of the Shikibuton and makes it last much longer.

Recommended for sleepers looking for :

a fresh, hypoallergenic, dust-mites resistant mattress with no toxic fire retardants added.
a mattress entirely made of natural components.
A traditional japanese mattress that offers a firm sleeping surface.
A mattress that can easily be rolled or folded. Two straps are sown at the bottom to tie the futon.

Recommendations and care

Shikibutons are not meant to be used on a futon frame as you would feel the slats. Tatamis are recommended to keep the mattress off the ground and prevent humidity and molding, which is not covered by warranty.
A removable and washable cover is a great addition to your Shikibuton in long term.
Keep your Shikibuton clean with an occasionnal vaccum. Rolling and shaking the mattress will give back volume to the fibers and fresh air and sun will kill bacteria.
Make sure to rotate your Shikibuton to prevent humidity accumulation.

Component Description – Cotton Fiber

Cotton fiber is used in our mattresses to add comfort by taking the body shape and absorb the humidity. A fresher sleeping surface will result in less movements and a better sleep.

The white cotton comes from the cotton flower that undergoes mechanical modifications. The jagged flowers are getting rid of their shell by passing through different vibration stages. Once the cotton is clean, a small percentage of polyester fibers are added to it following the futon flammability requirements in Canada. This cotton is naturally white and not chemically treated. The compound is distributed in layers of different sizes. We only use cotton in layers in the making of our futons. The cotton in layers is more resistant to compression and it allows to avoid any movement of the material inside the mattress.
